A New Site for Connecticut Poets

He was crippled in a fall several years ago and suffered a stroke in 2023. Your support will help cover costs of this site and provide more frequent updates.

Connecticut Poetry and Writing Groups.

• 1 ) Connecticut State Poet Laureate.

The current Connecticut State Poet Laureate is:
Margaret Gibson.
Margaret has won many awards for her poetry and is professor emerita at the University of Connecticut.
The Connecticut State Poet Laureate is appointed by the Connecticut Commission on Culture & Tourism.
Previous Connecticut State Poet Laureates include:
James Merill (1985-1995)
Leo Connellan (1996-2001)
Marilyn Nelson (2001-2007)
John Hollander (March 7, 2007-October 2009)
Dick Allen (July 1, 2010-June 30, 2015)
Rennie McQuilkin (July 1, 2015-June 2018)

• 2) The Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development.

The Connecticut Department of Economic and Community Development provides grants for artists and art groups in Connecticut working in all genres. Writers and poets should go to the link above for information on grant applications and specific literary programs.

• 3) The Connecticut Poetry Society.

The Connecticut Poetry Society welcomes all Connecticut poets of all ages to join and participate in Society activities. Membership is $30.00 per year. The address is: CPS Membership
311 Shingle Hill Road, West Haven, CT 06516. The Society provides contests, resources and an annual publication entitled: Connecticut River Review. Many events are currently being held online. Please see the link above for calendar information.

• 4) Connecticut Poetry Out Loud.

For the past several years, thousands of Connecticut high school students have participated in the Poetry Out Loud State recitation competitions, sponsored by the National Endowment for the Arts and the Poetry Foundation.,
Your high school is invited to participate!
Poetry Out Loud is a wonderful program for students. The program helps the develop Stage and speaking skills, confidence and a love of poetry. Poetry really needs to be spoken to truly be enjoyed. • 5) The Connecticut Poetry Slam.

Poetry Slams are events in which adults and students read and perform poetry for awards and prizes. There are many local events and even a National competition. Check with your local poetry group for the nearest Slam event and Slam schedules. The above link is for The Bushnell Youth Poetry Slam in Hartford.

• 6) The Connecticut Authors and Publishers Association..

The Connecticut Authors and Publishers Association welcomes all people working in the literary arts, in all genres. The group provides resources and publishing news. They meet both online and at The Sycamore Hills Park Community Center in Avon. Please see link above for calendar information.

• 7) Westport Writers' Workshop.

The Westport Writers’ Workshop is an amazing group that offers, quote: ‘over 100 workshops and seminars a year for all genres and skill levels.’ The group is funded largely by donations. Information on events can be found online at the link above.

• 8) The Fairfield Public Library.

The Fairfield Public Library hosts a number of programs for writers, including a new poetry program. Persons wishing to attend events are advised to sign up ahead of time. For calendar information, please see the link above.

• 9) Manchester Public Library.

The Manchester Public Library provides a list of the best Connecticut authors and information about their work. The site is an inspiration.&&&&&&&&&&&&

About the author Steven Robert Heine is an American poet and author. He has spent much of his life supporting poetry projects and events. He is the author of 8 volumes of poetry. In 2011 he was seriously injured in a fall that left him in great pain and almost unable to walk. He suffered a stroke in 2023. Heine receives no disability and relies on a small pension and retirement income. He is no longer able to make public appearances.

Steven Robert Heine is a West Coast poet & author. He has traveled extensively through the United States, including many trips to Connecticut. Heine has spent his life promoting poetry; serving as founder for many poetry contests. He is the author of fifteen books, including poetry, history and his own short auto-biographies.
